Platinum(IV) oxides are often referred to as Ada catalysts and are frequently used in inorganic synthesis reactions, mainly catalytic hydrogenation. Compared to its PtCl4 counterpart, the compound itself showed no cytochemical toxicity in lung-derived cells. It has also been used as a catalyst for oxidase-based electrochemical biosensors.
