5-Methyltetrahydrofolate is the most biologically active and functional form of folic acid.  It is the only way for folic acid to participate in physiological metabolism.  It is also the only form of free folic acid that appears in animal plasma and cells.  It is mainly used as active ingredients of medicines and food additives to prevent fetal neural tube defects and arteriosclerosis, treat megaloblastic anemia, enhance the therapeutic effect of fluorinated pyrimidine, and treat autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis.
