Application: Sudan orange G, Chinese alias 2,4-dihydroxyazobenzene, can be used as intermediate in pharmaceutical synthesis. Azophenyl group is an optically active functional group, which can be reversibly converted between cis and trans forms by irradiating it with light waves of different wavelengths. Due to the photoisomerization properties of azobenzene, it can be used in surface relief grating materials, liquid crystal materials and drug controlled release.
