D-Asparagine (H-D-Asn-OH) is a competitive inhibitor of L-asparagine hydrolysis with a Ki value of 0.24 mM. D-Asparagine is a nitrogen source for yeast strains. D-Asparagine is a good substrate for the external yeast asparaginase and a poor substrate for the internal enzyme.It is biosynthesized from methionine by the removal of its terminal Cε methyl group. Homocysteine can be recycled into methionine or converted into cysteine with the aid of certain B-vitamins.
